Turn the lights down low at the Ballastone Inn

Being a commercial photographer in Savannah is a great gig to have. There are soo many wonderful businesses to work with here in Savannah. On top of that, everything here is beautiful!

Over the past ten days I have spent a number of evenings photographing the Ballastone Inn here in Savannah. The Ballastone Inn is located on Oglethorpe Avenue and is gorgeous! When it comes to Bed and Breakfasts the Ballastone is world-class. The attention to detail inside of the Ballastone is second to none. Just being inside of the Ballastone made me feel much more important that I actually am! Haha…

Below are a few of the photographs I have taken on behalf of the Ballastone. These photographs were taken with an emphasis on their turn-down service, hence the darker and more luxurious mood in the photos. A normal general purpose room photograph would not be this dark. I really enjoyed working in such a beautiful bed and breakfast. I also met a few really nice people in the process…score!

A few weeks back I went out to photograph the sunrise in Savannah Georgia. Well, the sun did come up, but I didn’t photograph it. It was behind enough clouds to ruin my morning. Damn clouds…why are you never around when I need you?

If you are looking for a great sunrise photograph in Savannah Georgia, head over the Talmadge Bridge to Hutchinson Island. From this angle you will be able to photograph the sunrise coming up over Savannah…some of the year. Despite popular belief..or just ignorance, the sun does not rise from the same direction year-round. It changes every day and throughout the course of a year, the degree at which the sun comes up can change greatly! Check it out, go get your science on…

Anyways, I didn’t get a great photograph of the actual sunrise, but I was able to grab some cool photographs none-the-less. This photograph was taken from the same location as this photograph of River Street at sunset.

Okay, so Savannah is known for many things, but did you know that many ‘paranormal experts’ consider Savannah the most haunted city in America? Well, they do! During my time in Savannah, I must admit I have never been slimed, I have never had glasses thrown at me…and I have never had the pleasure of a spirit whispering my name into my ear while walking alone on the historic streets of Savannah at night. Maybe they just don’t like me that much…eh, whatever. Ha.

Many resourceful citizens of Savannah have capitalized on the paranormal claims and built pretty successful businesses, all in the name of seeking someone’s great great grandfather in the buildings and streets of Savannah. I was walking along one night and came across the window below. I don’t know what to say about it other than it caught my eye. Weird? Yes. Expected? Somewhat.

Next time you are in Savannah make sure to leave some time for some paranormal exploration. In all seriousness, it is very interesting and well-worth the time. If for no other reason, you will learn much about the history of Savannah.

Photographing the sunset at Pinckney Wildlife Refuge

About a month back I spent some time at the Pinckney Wildlife Refuge photographing the sunset and other assorted beauty. You may remember this photograph of the sun setting at Pinckney from earlier in this evening. This particular photo was taken not too long after that one was taken, but you can see what a big difference just a small amount of time can make. Gone are the blue hues and most of the clouds.

Pinckney Island is a pretty cool place to spend a few hours with a camera. When I went I was only able to see a small portion of the island but I have been told by regulars and natives to Hilton Head that there is much more to be seen than I did. So, I will probably plan another trip back to see what I missed. There is a trail that goes on for a few miles into the island. I may try to take a bike and help ensure that I get to see more of what Pinckney Island has to offer.

Photographing the Gloomy sunrise on Tybee

The other morning I went out to Tybee Island to photograph the sunrise. The sunrise itself turned out to be a little bit of  a bust compared to the day prior, which I wasn’t there to photograph (blah). As the sun was coming up there was absolutely no color, just grey. I was on the verge of hanging it up and going back home, but decided to stick it out awhile to see if anything good might happen. Every landscape photographer has a horror story or two about giving up on a landscape too soon and seeing an awesome scene in their rear-view mirror. So, stay put, see what happens. I mean, it wasn’t like a chore, you can’t beat watching the sun come up on Tybee Island. The sun breaking the horizon out over the Atlantic is a site to behold…when there are not a thousand and one clouds blocking the view.

Scenes like this are a perfect use for high dynamic range photography. Most of the photographs on my website are high dynamic range photographs. It really makes the colors pop and the textures come to life. There is no way you could get a photo like this from a single exposure. It isn’t happening. I have seen a thousand and one photographs of Tybee Beach and very few of them can actually make me feel like I am there. One more reason I love shooting high dynamic range…
