Burnside Bridge in Antietam Battlefield

Ah, isn’t summer great. This is the time I year I love hitting the road on road trips. Visiting Civil War Battlefields is a favorite destination for many of my road trips….much to the dismay of my kids.

So, the other day I made my way up to Hagerstown Maryland. My plan…let my girls buy whatever they wanted, THEN drag them with me to Antietam. I reasoned it was a fair trade off, ha. Anyways, we spent about three hours on the battlefield checking things out. I attempted to teach my youngest (6 years old) about cannons, only for her to tell me she thought it was boring, or was it that I was boring, eh…

Burnside Bridge is one of the most seen bridges of the Civil War, it turns up everywhere in people’s images. And for good reason, it is a beautiful bridge. The fall photographs here are great. This particular day I got there right before sunset. It made for a little different of a look than I see in most people pictures. It took me about 10 minutes to line the sun up on the lip of the bridge.

If you are in the mood for a day trip, consider Antietam, well, if you live near-by. It is a great battlefield with a lot of history. While still being one of the more significant battles of the Civil War, the battlefield at Antietam isn’t nearly as visited as some other I have been to, especially Gettysburg. This can be nice as you usually don’t have to deal with about one million people everywhere.
