Sunset at Grand Oaks, Savannah Georgia
Posted by Tim in Grand Oaks,HDR Photography,Landscape Photography,Savannah | March 19, 2012Photographing the Sunset near Savannah Georgia
Sunset is the perfect time to photograph landscapes..for me anyways. I don’t have to get up early, the light is beautiful, and once I am finished I get to go home and eat dinner. What more can you ask for?!
I have talked about it many times before. How simply photographing outdoors close to sunrise and sunset will instantly improve your landscape photography. And I cannot emphasize how important it is. In addition to the soft light that falls all around you, the colors cannot be beat. Far and away, my sunset and sunrise photographs are the most popular on my website. So, it seems that I am not alone in my love for these beautiful photographs.
Photographing Grand Oaks
Grand Oaks is a beautiful community. The other night you may have checked out my photograph of sunset from Grand Oaks. Well, here is a different photograph of the sunset at Grand Oaks. I love the colors in these photographs. The blues and oranges work together really well.
Sunset at Grand Oaks

So, this is my first St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah. I have heard many many stories about the festivities and from what I hear..this is going to be the largest St. Patrick’s Day celeberation in the world..ever…So, I want to be a part! I am currently auditioning people to be a member of my ‘crew’. If you have what it takes let me know! (Having what it takes me you don’t be an asshole..pretty much).
Sunset at Grand Oaks
I was out and about tonight photographing the sunset at the Grand Oaks. It turned out to be a pretty good sunset. I may not have my friend Scott Kublin’s track record of predicting good sunsets, but I am getting better. About 2 hours before the sunset I noticed the whispy clouds were increasing and the horizon was clear…it held up for the most part.
The Grand Oaks has some great landscaping and it was great to get out and snap some photos at sunset. I took many more tonight and I will be sure to put them up in the next few weeks or so..Maybe once Grand Oaks see how great my photography makes their places look they will hire me…(Hint, Hint)
Sunset at Harbour Town
Posted by Tim in Harbour Town,HDR Photography,Hilton Head,Landscape Photography | March 1, 2012Photographing at Harbour Town near Hilton Head
Way back in mid-January my friend Scott and I headed up to Hilton Head South Carolina to take some photographs at Harbour Town, a neat little community not too far from Savannah. There was an interesting lighthouse in Harbour Town which we both photographed pretty heavily. This is the only photograph of the sunset I will be posting though. I just couldn’t get many compostions I like. I don’t know if I was in a funk or what, but…blah. I enjoy this photograph, the clouds seem to mimic the piece of land, falling away from it.
Sunset at Pinckney Refuge
Posted by Tim in HDR Photography,Hilton Head,Landscape Photography,Pinckney Island | February 6, 2012Photographing the sunset at Pinckney Wildlife Refuge
About a month back I spent some time at the Pinckney Wildlife Refuge photographing the sunset and other assorted beauty. You may remember this photograph of the sun setting at Pinckney from earlier in this evening. This particular photo was taken not too long after that one was taken, but you can see what a big difference just a small amount of time can make. Gone are the blue hues and most of the clouds.
Pinckney Island is a pretty cool place to spend a few hours with a camera. When I went I was only able to see a small portion of the island but I have been told by regulars and natives to Hilton Head that there is much more to be seen than I did. So, I will probably plan another trip back to see what I missed. There is a trail that goes on for a few miles into the island. I may try to take a bike and help ensure that I get to see more of what Pinckney Island has to offer.
Photographing the Sunrise on Tybee Island
Posted by Tim in HDR Photography,Landscape Photography,Savannah,Tybee Island | February 6, 2012Photographing the Gloomy sunrise on Tybee
The other morning I went out to Tybee Island to photograph the sunrise. The sunrise itself turned out to be a little bit of a bust compared to the day prior, which I wasn’t there to photograph (blah). As the sun was coming up there was absolutely no color, just grey. I was on the verge of hanging it up and going back home, but decided to stick it out awhile to see if anything good might happen. Every landscape photographer has a horror story or two about giving up on a landscape too soon and seeing an awesome scene in their rear-view mirror. So, stay put, see what happens. I mean, it wasn’t like a chore, you can’t beat watching the sun come up on Tybee Island. The sun breaking the horizon out over the Atlantic is a site to behold…when there are not a thousand and one clouds blocking the view.
Scenes like this are a perfect use for high dynamic range photography. Most of the photographs on my website are high dynamic range photographs. It really makes the colors pop and the textures come to life. There is no way you could get a photo like this from a single exposure. It isn’t happening. I have seen a thousand and one photographs of Tybee Beach and very few of them can actually make me feel like I am there. One more reason I love shooting high dynamic range…
