Dying of a Broken Heart – Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah

Posted by in Black and White,Bonaventure Cemetery,Savannah | June 16, 2011

On one of my recent trips to Savannah Georgia I stopped at Bonaventure Cemetery. I had to go back. It is such a grounding experience. Walking among the memorials to the dead is humbling.

Frequently I stop to read the headstones to see who is buried in front of me, as if somehow knowing their name makes some connection. I came across this headstone and couldn’t help but notice the dates of their deaths. Mildred dying on April 6th 2006 and then less than 2 weeks later her husband Buron passed on. I couldn’t help but to think of them, married since 1948, dying within just a few days of each other. Imagine a love soo strong as to be married for soo long, it couldn’t escape my mind that Mildred’s husband died of a broken heart.  It is actually quite sad.

These days too many people take marriage as they take so much in life, as something disposable and to be taken for granted. Our society as a whole has put soo much value on not being respectful, not adhering to the most basic of principles of decency, honesty and commitment. You don’t like something, you just throw it away, right? I think this is not a disease of our society, as much as it is a symptom of a much bigger problem. Mildred and Buron’s everlasting love, right up to the end, really touched me…

So, here is to Mildred and Buron…wherever you may be I hope you are together, still in as much love as you were while on this Earth…

Bonaventure Cemetery and meeting Daniel Tosh

Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah Georgia is a great place for HDR Photography. The light play always creates interesting photographs. When I got down to Savannah the first time, it was the first place I went. Thanks to my awesome Droid phone with the Google Navigation App, I had no problem finding it, haha. It was a little unnerving showing up and seeing all of the signs saying, pretty much, that your car will be robbed, haha, but luckily, I was not.

Daniel Tosh..

So, turns out I am going to get a chance to hang out with Daniel Tosh before his show here in Pittsburgh . Thanks to everyone at the P.C.T. for helping set it up. If you don’t know who he is, you are missing out. His show on Comedy Central is one of the funniest shows on TV. Check him out. I am hoping to get some good shots before the show, we will see.

The Cross at Bonaventure – HDR Photography in Savannah Georgia

Well, at least one of about 1,000 crosses anyways. This one caught my attention more than the others though. Like soo many other plots in Bonaventure Cemetery this was a family plot. For many generations, family members are buried side by side. This particular plot was right near the entrance that I used. I must say, when you get to Bonaventure Cemetery, there are signs everywhere reminding you to hide all of your valuables, pretty much promising you that you will in fact be robbed, ha. Not very comforting considering what I went through just the week prior. Anyways…

Today I started looking at some other points of interest for my next trip to Savannah. There were soo many places I wanted to go to but just didn’t find the time or energy to do so. Some places, I went to put I didn’t feel like taking pictures because I was soo bummed that I only had shitty equipment to use, like Wormsloe…gorgeous place, but I took exactly ZERO photographs…I could really kick myself in the ass now…

I am going to keep this one short and sweet as I need to get my butt to bed…it is 4 am here, blah!

Here is another HDR Photograph from Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah. Pretty simple shot, only 5 bracketed exposures. Ta-Da! Like I stated in the last post I made about Bonaventure, this place is amazing. It is not only beautiful but very….soothing in a weird kind of way. Very peaceful. If you are ever in the Savannah area, make sure you stop by to check it out. If you cannot make it to Bonaventure, do not fret, as there are many very scenic cemeteries located throughout the city and on the outskirts of town too.

In a few weeks I am going to be heading back to Savannah. If you are a local business or organization looking for a photographer for any purpose please contact me by calling me at 814-279-8717 and asking for Tim. You may notice that my style of photography is rather unique and eye-catching….great pictures sell more then your best sales person ever will!

Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah

Bonaventure Cemetery is one of the more famous cemeteries, if not the most famous, in Savannah. Bonaventure Cemetery is located just east of Savannah. Bonaventure was actually the second place I visited in Savannah, after capturing the sunrise over Tybee Island.

As far as cemeteries go, it is probably the coolest one I have ever had the pleasure of walking through. The statues and monuments were awesome. Thousands of them. Another thing I found interesting was that a lot of the cemetery was laid out in family plots. In some of them, the same family have been buried for up to 200 years. Many generations all in the same place for eternity. I am sure that has to be comforting in some regards.

Most of the cemetery was dominated by old oak trees with Spanish moss hanging everywhere. It was very typical of what I imagined when I thought of Savannah. It was very sandy there too. And hot…way too hot, ha.

More pictures of Bonaventure to come…
