Lafayette Square at Sunrise
Posted by Tim in HDR Photography,Lafayette Square,Savannah | January 20, 2012Photographing Lafayette Square at Sunrise in Savannah
Are you starting to notice a theme with the last few photographs of Savannah that I have put on the blog? Sunrise photography in Savannah! It was such a beautiful morning, with gorgeous light, that I cannot help myself put to keep putting them up. I promise that tomorrow I will refrain from putting up another sunrise photograph from Savannah…but I am guessing by the amount of traffic that comes to the site to view them, putting another one online probably isn’t a bad idea.
This photograph was taken in Lafayette Square here in Savannah. Named for the Marquis de Lafayette, of Revolutionary War fame, Lafayette is a very popular Square with tourists. The biggest draw, which you can see in the background, is the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. The Cathedral is a beautiful place to visit. There are few places in Savannah that photograph more amazingly then the inside of St. John’s. You can view photographs of the inside of the Cathedral of St. Johns here:
- The Candles inside of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist
- The rear of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist

In the foreground of the photograph you can see the fountain that is placed in the center of Lafayette Square. This fountain commemorates the 250th anniversary of the founding of Georgia as a colony. On St. Patrick’s Day, the water in the fountain is dyed green.
The Andrew Low House in Savannah
Posted by Tim in HDR Photography,Historic District,Lafayette Square,Savannah | December 12, 2011The Andrew Low House
The Andrew Low House, on Abercorn Street/Lafayette Square is a beautiful Savannah Home. If the last name sounds familiar when mentioned with Savannah, it is because of Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of the Girl Scouts. She lived in this house for some time, and died here. A few famous people spent time in this house, including Robert E. Lee himself.
You can visit this house and take a tour of the home and its furnishings. You can visit their website by clicking here.
Taking this photograph was quite the challenge. In front of the house is a wrought iron fence that is about 5 feet high or so. It was too tall for my tripod to see over, even when fully extended. So, I had to take the camera off of the tripod and balance it on the fence for all 7 exposures, all the while trying not to let it move a millimeter. It was quite the challenge.
Photographing the Cathedral of St. John The Baptist in Savannah Georgia
Posted by Tim in HDR Photography,Historic District,Lafayette Square,Savannah | October 25, 2011One of my favorite places to photograph in Savannah is the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Inside and out, the awe-inspiring details and craftsmanship that went into this Cathedral really helps it stand out in a city known for its incredible architecture. This photograph was taken from near the front of the Cathedral looking towards the back. You may also remember this photograph I posted a few weeks ago from the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. You can also check out this photograph of the candles in the front of the Cathedral of St. Johns.
Photographing the inside can be a little tricky. It requires a little bit of luck. Being a very popular tourst destination in Savannah, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist can be very crowded at times. It is kind of hit or miss whether you will have to deal with crowds or not. If you get inside of the Cathedral and all of Savannah’s tourists are elsewhere, take advantage of the time, don’t let it go to waste. You will find every nock of the cathedral full of details and colors waiting to be photographed. If you are not soo lucky and the crowds are all around, you can try setting your aperture as low as your lens will allow, set your iso as low as possible. This will maximize your shutter speed and some of the people may fade to oblivion. Of course you will need a little luck with this method too. If you have some time, explore the Cathedral and wait for the shot to open up. You could surely be in a less inspirational location to have to waste a few minutes in. I have never had a problem taking a tripod into the Cathedral, but in doing so, please be respectful to everyone else in the Cathedral. It would be a real shame for them to outlaw tripods because of impolite photographers (you know who you are).
So, the next time you are in Savannah, head on over to the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist. It is located at the corner of Harris and Abercorn Streets, on Lafayette Square.
The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist
Posted by Tim in Historic District,Lafayette Square,Savannah | September 19, 2011This photograph is of the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Savannah Georgia. Located on Abercorn Street in Savannah, Saint John’s in one of the most photographed landmarks in Savannah. Thanks to a wonderful tour-guide I was able to get inside of the Cathedral for about an hour to take photographs. This photo is one of 50 I took.
