Photographing the sunset on McQueen Island

McQueen Island is a cool island right between Wilmington Island and Tybee Island, near Savannah Georgia. It is a fun place to photograph, and for such a small island, there is a lot to photograph. Sunsets, such as the one below can be quite spectacular.
On McQueen Island, there is a biking/walking/running trail that runs along the left side of 80. That is where I took this photograph. At the time of this photograph, the sun had already been below the horizon for about 15 minutes. Many times, photographers just starting out will leave as soon as the sun drops below the horizon. We will chalk that up as a beginner’s mistake. You have to stay longer. The best, most saturated colors don’t even come up to play until the sun goes below the horizon. So, unless you are in a big hurry, don’t leave..wait..and enjoy Mother Nature’s light show.
Sunset over Lazaretto Creek

The other night featured a gorgeous sunset here in Savannah. I didn’t have much time to prepare for it, as I spent most of the day doing real work, ha. So, I choose a favorite spot near-by and headed out to photograph the sunset.
Lazaretto Creek is about 15 minutes east of Downtown Savannah on the way to Tybee Island. Lazaretto Creek is what separates Tybee from McQueen Island. On any given day you can see shrimp boats, bottlenose dolphins and lots of other assorted wildlife. Most evening you can find gorgeous sunsets just like this one.
The Muddy Field on McQueen Island

McQueen Island, though not as well known as the other islands near Savannah, is a great place to take your camera for a few hours of photographic fun! The sunsets from here are always great, You never know what you are going to see while wondering around McQueen Island…dolphins, egrets, maybe even a manatee or two during the right time of year.
This photograph was taken from the field on the left hand side of the road, right before you get to the bridge for Lazaretto Creek. If you attempt to get back in there make sure to take good boots and some pants you don’t care about. It is muddy and it stinks like, well, a swamp…go figure, right? Ha.. At one point I was up to my knees in cold wet smelly mud. Nice…
